Using Public Transportation in Korea

Navigating public transportation in Korea might seem daunting,

but let me guide you through it step by step.

1. T-money Card:

To use public transportation in Korea, you'll need a card equipped with transportation functions. For travelers visiting Korea, the T-money card is highly recommended. T-money cards come in various cute designs featuring characters, and they can be purchased at nearby convenience stores for prices ranging from 5,000 to 30,000 won. Simply head to a nearby convenience store and buy one with cash.

2. T-money Card Charging:

Simply buying a T-money card isn't enough to immediately use public transportation. T-money cards operate on a prepaid basis, meaning you must charge them with cash before use. You can conveniently charge your card at the same convenience store where you purchased it.

3. Using Charged T-money Card:

Korea has two main modes of public transportation: buses and subways.

1) Buses:

When boarding a bus, simply tap your T-money card and you're good to go. Since buses don't stop at every station, remember to press the red bell inside the bus when you want to get off. Don't forget to tap your T-money card when getting off as well.

2) Subways:

Using subways, where English announcements are also available, may be more convenient. Tap your card at the turnstile, board the subway, and get off at your desired station. Don't forget to tap your card at the turnstile when exiting as well.

4. Tips:

Here are some tips to make using public transportation even more convenient:

By downloading three apps - Naver Map, Kakao Map, and Google Maps - you can easily navigate public transportation. Simply input your departure and destination points to find out which public transportation to take and when it arrives. These apps also provide alerts for boarding and disembarking, ensuring a worry-free journey on public transportation.

With these tips, you can comfortably travel around Korea using public transportation. If you have any questions about Korea, feel free to ask Travel Tailor anytime!
